| | Symptoms: | Holes bored into the side of the flower buds | | Parts Affected: | Flowers | | Cause: | Budworm | | Description: Budworm is a caterpillar. It will go from flower to flower and just bore a hole into the flower bud to eat the stamens. One caterpillar can move through a number of buds per day, and will often go unnoticed. When the flowers open , they are full of holes. | | Remedy: Picking the caterpillars off is one solution. Spraying is less effective because the head of the caterpiller is buried inside the flower. Budworm is resistant to many chemicals so a natural remedy such as Dipel maybe the solution.
