Water Stress Print

Category: Water

Symptoms: Leaves going brown starting from the base and progressing up the plant.Image

Parts Affected: Leaves

Cause: Drying out

Description: This problem usually starts as the weather warms up and the ground dries up from about November. If there is no supplementary water, the leaves will go brown up to near the top of the plant.

Remedy: Mulching and keeping the ground moist will stop or reduce problem from happening. Do not over water as this will cause other problems. Deep watering once a week in hot weather should do. Avoid watering with overhead sprinklers.

ImageThis is the same plant as above the following spring. This particular plant is growing in very heavy clay with no water. There was just enough moisture to keep the plant alive, but that was it.

Drying out, once your clematis is established probably won't kill it, but it won't look very nice through summer. With a little supplimentary water, theclematis plant will look a lot better.
