Feeding

ImageThis has to be the most asked question. What should I feed my clematis with?

The answer is quite simple.

Feed clematis with any fertilizer that is suitable for roses.

Clematis are very hungry plants. They require regular feeding, about once every three months with a slow release fertilizer to do well. The best time to feed is just after pruning. Don't feed when flower buds are well advanced as this may cause your clematis to start growing vigorously at the expense of the flowers.

Is liquid feeding ok?

Liquid feeding is fine for a quick boost or adding extra potasium, but if it is the only source of fertilizer it is important to keep it up!

How much fertilizer?

The amount of feeding depends on the size of the plant and the type of fertilizer. A small plant may only need a teaspoon of fertilizer. A large, well established healthy plant will need several hand fulls. In a new garden such as the one above, a little often is better than too much at once or none at all. There is no rule of thumb except to say that you will need a bigger amount of organic fertilizer (like Dynamic Lifter) than you will a chemical fertilizer such as Osmocote to do the same job.
